Heart

From the moment it begins beating until the moment it stops, the human heart works tirelessly. In an average lifetime, the heart beats more than two and a half billion times – 72 times per minute of our lives - without ever pausing to rest. Give or take, of course. Subtract a few for those moments where your heart seemed to skip a beat at the sight of someone you love, moments when it seemed to stop in terror, moments when it felt broken. Add a few for the adrenaline rushes of excitement, joy, sweat inducing hard work. It swells with pride and love. It grows cold in sadness and disappointment. It aches. It’s so loud sometimes you can hear it in your ears. Life pulls at its strings. You never stop marveling at the power of laying your head on someone’s chest and listening to their rhythm or having someone else listen to yours. And it beats. And it beats. And it beats in time to your life like the second hand on a clock.
